Don’t underestimate the power of your cleansing routine. Cleansing is the unsung hero of your skincare routine, setting your skin up for success with all of the subsequent skincare steps. So, let’s talk about how to wash your face like a dermatologist. Focusing on your skin type is one high-impact way to find the right cleanser for you.
DRY SKIN/ MATURE SKIN/ SENSITIVE SKIN:
If you have dry, sensitive, or mature skin (if you’re over 40, you may find your skin is more dry and more sensitive than it used to be), then you’re going to want to go with a gentle, creamy cleanser.
You want to look for ingredients like:
Ceramides and niacinamide to help support a healthy skin barrier.
Cucumber extract , certain peptides, and marshmallow root extract to calm and soothe.
Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and xylitol help trap water in the skin, keeping it hydrated.
My favorite cleanser for dry skin, sensitive skin, and skin over 40 is, of course, Bowe Glowe Cleanser. It was formulated for, and clinically-tested on, sensitive skin and post procedure skin, which we know is especially vulnerable. Our independent clinical studies demonstrated that even though it’s incredibly gentle even on sensitive skin, it was able to remove 100% of sunscreen, makeup and pollution with just one wash*. It’s the perfect balance of getting that thorough cleanse that removes all unwanted debris from the skin surface and deep within the pores, while respecting the health of your skin barrier.
OILY/ COMBINATION SKIN:
If you have oily or combination skin, consider using a gel cleanser instead of a cream cleanser, and you might even consider looking for a cleanser with active ingredients that help with acne and oil control.
Ingredients that can help regulate oil production by either decreasing production of oil or removing excess oil from the surface of the skin include:
Salicylic Acid (also known as BHA)
Niacinamide
Green Tea
Azelaic Acid
