An oil extracted from sunflower seeds and used as an emollient, which moisturizes skin by forming a medium weight barrier to help reduce the loss of skin's water content. Rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids that help to soothe, nourish and replenish skin. For example, sunflower seed oil contains an especially high content of linoleic acid, which helps skin synthesize its own ceramides and promotes a healthy skin barrier. It’s ideal for sensitive skin, or compromised skin, and has calming and soothing properties.
“Some plant-derived oils are amazing for the skin, while others, not so much. For example, olive oil can exacerbate skin issues in people with a compromised skin barrier, such as those with eczema. Sunflower seed oil is an example of a plant-based oil I absolutely love for skin health. Unlike olive oil, it soothes inflamed skin. Unlike essential oils, which can be irritating or cause allergies in some people (especially with long-term use), sunflower seed oil is non-volatile, non-fragrant oil loaded with skin benefits. It calms skin, helps support the skin barrier, and may even boost natural ceramides in the skin. Some studies have shown it helps sensitive skin conditions like eczema, and I’ll often recommend moisturizers with sunflower seed oil as an alternative to steroids in my patients with eczema.”
