A potent antioxidant known as a carotenoid that has a vibrant red/orange hue. Carotenoids are yellow, orange and red pigments that are produced by plants, algae, and bacteria. Astaxanthin is naturally found in some forms of red algae. Its high content gives salmon its pink color and is the pigment responsible for making pink flamingos pink! Flamingos are born a dull grey, but with pink shrimp and red algae as a part of their diet, they slowly turn that beautiful shade of peach / pink thanks to the astaxanthin content in their food.
Often referred to as the “king of carotenoids,” studies have shown that the antioxidant ability of astaxanthin is even more powerful than vitamin C and vitamin E, and anywhere from 10 to 100 times more powerful than other carotenoids like beta-carotene and lycopene. Studies have found that combining both topical and oral supplementation with astaxanthin provides soothing benefits, improves skin texture and elasticity, reduces UV induced dark spots, and even improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Fun fact: astaxanthin derived from algae is what gives our Asta C Vitamin C Age Defense Serum's formula its gorgeous, pink-flamingo hue!
